' An unspoilt gem of the Lake District .’

The Duddon Valley, Broughton Mills in the Lickle Valley, and neighbouring Woodland are delightful, unspoilt areas in Southwest Cumbria. Situated just inside the Lake District National Park about ten miles from Coniston and close to classic peaks including the Old Man of Coniston and Scafell Pike, the area is perfect for those who want to get away from it all. This corner of Hidden Britain offers huge scope for walkers of all abilities, wildlife enthusiasts and those who simply enjoy breathtaking scenery, peace and tranquility. Sheep farming is still carried out here on farms which have passed from generation to generation and traditional practices and activities continue to be observed. The Duddon Valley, Broughton Mills and Woodland are also steeped in history, with traces of Iron Age and Bronze Age settlements and former local industry.

A variety of accommodation is available including a farm campsite, comfortable B&Bs, cosy cottages, converted barns and larger self-catering units. Traditional pubs provide home-cooked food, good ale and a warm welcome.

Walks in the Duddon Valley
Because we want to share the beauty and enchantment of our area with you and tell you more about it, we have produced a series of easy to moderate, lower-level walks. Each walk is described on a separate laminated sheet, complete with a simple map and notes on points of interest along the route. Pictures and drawings from local photographers and artists illustrate the abundant flora and fauna, wonderful views and interesting structures you can expect to encounter along the way. General information on the area’s history, geology, wildlife and, of course, the indigenous Herdwick sheep which are a feature of our landscape, are included in the pack. Visitors can obtain this from accommodation providers and local points of sale.

Our destination is too special to remain hidden yet too precious to spoil. There is plenty to share yet much to preserve for others to enjoy so we are anxious to maintain its character. We welcome people who value its qualities as much as we who live here do, and will strive to ensure the Duddon Valley, Broughton Mills and Woodland remain areas where sheep outnumber people.
